Pomorie Healing Mud

Pomorie is one of the most popular places for mud baths in Bulgaria. The deposits of healing mud and lye around Pomorie and Lake Athanasov are not only one of the largest, but are also unparalleled in the world in quality and composition. Lye can be extracted from both, but mud only from Pomorie Lake.

Healing mud is a natural product with diverse chemical composition and physico-chemical properties, formed under the influence of factors such as climate, water, soil, plant and animal organisms. It has pronounced anti-inflammatory, analgesic, immunostimulating, circulatory, metabolic and bone-strengthening properties.

It is said that the healing properties of mud were known to people as early as two thousand years ago. Ancient Egyptians, Romans, Greeks and Indians used mud as a healing agent especially for joint pain, swelling, chronic inflammation.

In Bulgaria, archaeological excavations show that mud therapy found widespread application around the 19th century in the area of Pomorie, where the area is rich in valuable limestone mud. Again there, in 1925, the first mud cure facility was built in the country.
